Customer reviews in the age of social media - Customer Satisfaction and how it's affected by online media

Media monitoring is crucial for businesses to assess the extent to which their products are making money. For instance, the Treo 600 and 650. They were both flawed - the 600 had that awful low res screen and the 650 only had 2.5G speed. They were also both like bricks in the pocket. However they were both great to use with superb one handed influencing children by media navigation, brilliant keypads, Palm PIM, threaded SMS and snappy performance. I didn't buy a 680 because it didn't offer enough of an upgrade but the Centro looked perfect, smaller form factor and bargain price but the same great Treo underneath.

Media monitoring shows that the Centro's good points are many. It is a nice size, and there's no sign of that awful antenna. It's got a very generous 64 mb of memory and the camera has finally been upgraded from VGA, albeit to a tiny bit better 1.3 megapixel. The quality of the shots is obviously not great but is absolutely fine for photoblogging. I've had no problems with reception (well other than with coverage but that's a whole other article). The Centro's battery life is, again, fine. I usually charge once a day but can get away with every two days even with medium usage. It doesn't last as long my Treo 650 was but then it's a much smaller device. Call quality is more than adequate, including with the speaker video journalism phone. It has the Treo feature of a button on the top which immediately mutes the phone. This is one of my favourite features of any type of phone. It's a really small thing but is so useful when I'm in a meeting or even just having a quick chat with someone.

The Centro has a couple of odd points which are not exactly negatives but a little annoying. It is a little hard to insert and remove the SIM card. I loved the Treo's little SIM slot and think it's shame they lost this. The memory card slot also has a fiddly little cover which can only be accessed by removing the battery cover. With a decent sized memory card this isn't much of an issue but is worth taking into consideration if you are likely to swapping cards often.

And finally the bad points of media monitoring. The first one is a little shallow and very much about personal preference - I really don't think much of the black finish with spangly silver bits. It looks like a toy to me. In fairness the Centro is a cheap device and the silver bits do hide fingerprints, but I still feel they could have made a little more effort. I would love to have had the choice of the white Centro available in the US which I think looks much better. Secondly it is only 2.5G, which in the US seems to mean tolerable speeds via EDGE, but in the UK means GPRS 99% of the time as EDGE coverage is terrible.

The last bad point is one that seems to put in me in a minority and is also the reason I am selling my Centro - the keypad. I simply cannot type well on it. The button design is different to the Treo, with a much more rubbery coating but still with a noticable click so you know it's been pressed. That's not the issue though - the problem is the size. I've tried a few different two and single fingered approaches to typing on it but I always find my fingers feel cramped and I frequently produce typos. When I realised I was starting to lapse into text speak (u for you, 4 for for etc.) simply because that meant less typing I decided it had to go. I am pretty disappointed by this as I was such a Treo fan and I wanted to love the Centro. I'm sure that many folks will love it and have no problems at all, Shaun certainly doesn't seem to, but there is no point having a device that I can't use properly.
